Anthony D. Richard, K.C. (Retired Counsel)

Tony retired as of 2022 after 39 years at the Bar and as Managing Partner of McGee Richard for 33 years. The emphasis of his practice was Family Law but he also had a broad practice including Wills & Estates, Real Estate and Litigation. Upon retirement he continues to use his experience as a trained arbitrator and mediator.

In his family practice Tony acted for clients from a broad cross section of professions and occupations and encountered virtually every issue that could arise from the breakdown of a relationship. He dealt with custody and mobility issues, as well as child and spousal support issues. Property matters were often complex because of ownership of corporations, professional corporations, businesses, or farms. Many matters involved second marriages, pensions, and exemptions. Some required financial experts and his knowledge of financial matters was critical to the ability to achieve successful resolutions. Tony’s practice evolved to be primarily by referral including referrals from other lawyers, some judges and on occasion even came from ex-spouses of his clients who appreciated his approach to achieving a fair resolution while avoiding adding fuel to the fire.

Tony was active in his profession and in the Community. He was the primary lawyer/instructor of the High Conflict Parenting After Separation Course for 9 years, was a Charter Member of the Collaborative Family Law Group, taught the Family Law and Legal writing sections of the Bar Admission Course and served on the Alberta Law Society Family Law Advisory Committee. He served as President of the Royal Glenora Club and President of the Whitemud Progressive Conservative Constituency Association. He also Chaired the Tennis venue at the World Master Games held in Edmonton.
